Massage Therapy

WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including, muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy increases blood flow and circulation in the body, which helps promote healing and rejuvenation.

Massage therapy pushes blood through the tissue, breaks up scar tissue and separates the fibers of the muscle.

Massage therapy is regulated by the Regulated Healthcare Practitioners Act and the Massage Therapy Act. Only those individuals who have completed specific training and met the strict provincial competency requirements declared by the College of Massage Therapist Ontario can call themselves a "Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)”.

Why visit a Registered Massage Therapist?

Tremendous benefits can be achieved through massage therapy from an RMT.  Massage therapy helps alleviate the discomfort associated with daily and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain conditions. Whether you need to get relief from chronic pain or headaches, reduce muscle tension, or have a moment of relaxation, massage therapy can increase your physical and emotional well-being and improve your quality of life.

Massage therapy has also been proven to prevent musculoskeletal conditions before they develop. And let’s just be honest—massage just feels great!

What conditions can be treated with massage therapy?

A wide range of conditions can be treated safely and effectively by massage therapy, including:

  • Acute and chronic pain in the back, jaw, leg and  neck
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Autoimmune disorders, including ALS, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome
  • Injuries from motor vehicle accidents (MVAs)

What should I expect in a massage therapy treatment?

On your first visit, you will need to complete a confidential health history as part of your assessment. This is important because your RMT needs to know if you have any medical conditions or are taking any medications. Your RMT will listen to your concerns and assess your individual needs, including factors that may be contributing to your injury (e.g., lifestyle, nutrition). Your RMT will then develop an appropriate treatment plan. Massage therapy treatments range in duration: 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes.

RMTs at Degen’s Health Group offer both therapeutic and relaxing massage. They also provide pregnancy massage. Our RMTs use various techniques, including Swedish, deep tissue, fascial, and trigger point massage.

It’s important that you are comfortable and able to relax during treatment. Your RMT will always describe the treatment that will be provided to ensure that you are comfortable with it. You do not have to remove your clothing to receive massage therapy, but all RMTs are trained in proper draping procedures to ensure that your privacy is respected at all times. Please feel free to discuss these options with your therapist.

Who can benefit from massage therapy?

Massage therapy is appropriate for individuals of all ages for the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions.

Seniors often find massage therapy helpful to relieve aches and pains caused by stiffness and dysfunction.

Any adult, in any job field or with any range of daily activities, can get massage therapy to alleviate the discomfort of daily and occupational stresses and over-use of certain muscles.
Kids with busy amateur and competitive sports schedules, as well as repetitive stress from computers and gaming, find massage therapy to be a very effective non-medicinal solution.

Pregnant women can also benefit from massage therapy. Massage therapy during pregnancy can actually help improve mood, decrease pain, and decrease stress hormones.

Do Extended Health Care Plans cover massage therapy?

When performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT or MT), massage therapy is covered by most extended health care plans. In some cases, you may require a prescription from your family doctor to be able to make a claim for massage therapy. Each plan is unique, so it’s best to check with your plan.
